Thelma’s Bourbon Cake!

Baked Goodies | posted on December 8, 2014

Bourbon Cake is my family’s favorite Christmas tradition.  Every year, every woman makes it for our Christmas dinner.  Ever since I opened Victory Garden, I have been making it as a special holiday cake for our customers.  This year, the only difference will be that we are making it with goat butter instead of cow’s butter, because, well, we are goat people.  You can order it in the store for pick up, just give us 24-48 hours notice.  Large cakes are $30 and individual ones are $4/each.

Champurrado Tart

Baked Goodies, Flavors, Goods and Goodies, Ingredients, News | posted on February 5, 2014

My chocolate Champurrado Tart is one of my specialties.  I was inspired to create this tart after watching the 2006 film, Quinceanera, in which the girl in the movie’s grandfather sells Champurrado in the streets of Los Angeles.  I was familiar with atole, but had not tried champurrado before that movie.  Atole is a Mexican cornmeal based beverage that comes in many flavors, and is drunk in colder weather for energy and sustenance.  Champurrado is a chocolate flavored atole with aniseed.  I loved the thought of chocolate and anise together, and ever since seeing the film, it has been one of my favorite combinations.  The tart shells are made with a bit of Mexican cornmeal, and the filling has chocolate, thick cream, and aniseeds.  It is a delightful experience that we hope you try.

Holiday Cakes!

Thelma's Bourbon Cake

Though first and foremost we are an ice cream shop, every December we bring out our two cakes for the season.  The first is Thelma’s Bourbon Cake, named after my grandmother.  She baked this cake every year for us during the holidays, making Bourbon Cake synonymous with Christmas in the Brittan household.  We sell the large Bourbon Cakes for $25 at the shop, and they come dusted with confectioners sugar in a lovely brown cake box.  The second cake is a Triple Ginger Cake, which is made with fresh, candied, and powdered ginger.  I have never been a huge cake person (besides Birthday Cake, of course), but the first time I tried this cake I finished gobbling it up with abandon.  There is something sneakily addictive of the mixture of maple, molasses, and ginger in this delicious cake.  Since the holidays are usually associated with various spiced cakes, this one is perfect for the holiday season.  I suggest serving it for brunch, as a hostess gift, or enjoying after dinner with a dollop of ice cream.  The Triple Ginger Cakes are $11.65 each.  We serve both cakes in the individual form at the shop, so you can always stop by and try them for yourself before ordering a whole one.

Salted Caramel (Chocolate) Rosemary Brownies

Salted Caramel Rosemary Brownie

I have been wanting to make this brownie recipe for a while, because it combines two of our most popular flavors: Salted Caramel and Chocolate Rosemary.  I keep wanting to call it the Salted Caramel- Chocolate Rosemary Brownie, but then the Chocolate part is redundant.  Rosemary is one of my favorite herbs, and it pairs so well with desserts.  It is a lovely match for cream, honey, chocolate, and cornmeal based confections.  Rosemary adds a sophisticated savory element to sweet things, along with an herbal essence that is hard to resist.  If you have ever tried our Rosemary Polenta Cake, you will know what I mean.  The brownie has fresh chopped rosemary from Keith’s Farm- my favorite source, as well as our goat milk caramel swirled into the top.  We sprinkle some Maldon sea salt before baking.  We will be rotating this in and around with our other baked goods.
